While the development process in general and economic development in particular have thrown new challenges for people across the globe, these challenges are felt differently by men and women. For example, the impacts of climate change are experienced dissimilarly by women who carry a double or triple burden of work including domestic work, subsistence food production as well as child care. Though experiences of various countries, both developed and developing show that economic advancement aids in the attainment of gender equality to some extent, in several areas gender differences are not easy to remove. One such area is the gender wage gap where even the US shows a gap of about $10000 between the median earnings of men vs women (according to the U.S. Census Bureauís 2019 American Community Survey (ACS)). This difference is even higher in China (in terms of percentage). Gender and health is another important area that needs careful examination, particularly in a country like India. The issues on gender and development also differ across the states of India.

Given the importance of gender in the context of development a one-day workshop is planned to be held on the 2nd of September 2022 at ISEC in a hybrid mode (zoom link will be shared shortly).

Distinguished scholars working on gender studies from different disciplines of the social sciences have been invited to shed light on pertinent issues on gender and development. These deliberations will also focus on different regions of India. In addition, some PhD scholars will make short presentations of their work-in-progress to get inputs from experts.
