The Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, is organising Research Methodology Course in Social Science Research for research scholars, post-doctoral researchers and teachers from universities, colleges and academic institutions belonging to SCs & STs from 21 – 30 March 2019. The course is sponsored by the ICSSR, New Delhi.

Course objectives

The course is designed to expose, inform, understand and equip the participating scholars to the importance, need, use, development and change of research tools/design/method in conducting a scientific social science research. It will also develop the capabilities of the participants to understand, mold, blend and use theoretical and empirical study of social science research. The course is designed to equip skills to identify and pursue research with interest in conjunction with the recent developments and contemporary issues in social science research and to familiarize relevant social science research methodology to undertake research of interest and choice. The course is structured with an inter-disciplinary approach consisting of series of lectures, presentations and hands-on experiences with relevant datasets using various techniques.

Themes

Conceptual issues and theoretical approaches on emerging areas of social science research.

Art, knowledge, skills, ability and relevancy to undertake research: identification and selection of research problem, research proposals, research design, formulating hypotheses, identifying variables, design of questionnaire, sampling methods, relevant statistical tools, estimation techniques, qualitative research, quantitative research, ethnographic studies, case study, action research, new advances in methods of social science research, ethical issues in social science research and research inference.

Statistics and econometrics: database, hands-on experiences, exposure of statistical packages (SPSS, STATA etc), handling large scale data sets like NSSO unit level data using SPSS and STATA.

Data analysis, interpreting research, consolidation of research findings, art of research writing and publication, research report and dissemination.

Resource persons

The course will be taught by eminent academicians of the Institute and others.

Who can participate?

Young social science researchers/academics/teachers from research institutes, colleges, universities, NGOs and other research agencies belonging to SCs/STs social groups.

Minimum qualifications

Master’s Degree in any Social Sciences discipline.

No. of participants

30 participants will be selected on all-India basis.

Boarding, lodging and travel

Outstation participants will be provided free boarding and lodging facility in the ISEC campus (subjected to its availability). A 3-tier AC Train/ economy (APEX) air fare on the basis of participant’s eligibility by the shortest route will be reimbursed to the selected candidates from place of study/work.

Interested candidates who desire to participate in the course may download the prescribed application form and fill up and send along with a detailed CV of the candidate, relevant documents, a note on their area of research interest and reason for participation in the course and a forwarding letter from candidates’ Institution to the course co-ordinator through e-mail to reimeingam@isec.ac.in or by post to the course co-ordinator with a superscript as “Research Methodology Course in Social Science Research for SC/ST” on or before 10 February 2019.

Selection method

Applications will be scrutinised thoroughly. Selected candidates will be intimated by mid of February 2019. The decision of the selection committee is final.
